Shadow Index

파이프갤러리는 9월 16일부터 10월 15일까지 김다움(b.1983)과 양승원(b.1984)의 2인전 《Shadow Index》를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 감각과 기억이 교차하는 지점을 조명하며, 두 작가의 작업을 통해 이를 탐구한다. 김다움과 양승원은 현실의 표면 아래 잠재한 감정과 기억의 흔적을 각자의 매체적 언어로 드러내어, 실재와 비실재, 개인과 사회, 경험과 허구가 교차하는 지점을 환기한다.

김다움은 지속적으로 '인터페이스' 개념을 기반으로 물리적 공간과 가상 환경, 사적 경험과 사회적 맥락 사이의 경계를 가시화해왔다. 그중 Measure 시리즈는 '측정'을 내면의 감각을 포착하는 은유로 삼아, 선과 색, 질감을 감정의 파동처럼 화면에 풀어낸다. 회화적 매체임에도 불구하고, 그의 화면은 고정된 이미지라기보다 소리와 진동, 기억의 흔적이 살아 움직이는 장처럼 펼쳐진다. 실제로 표면에는 물감이 고여 얕은 웅덩이처럼 빛을 머금은 부분과 상대적으로 높이 솟은 질감이 교차한다. 이러한 미묘한 고저는 영상과 사운드, 공공미술과 설치를 통해 축적해온 그의 언어가 회화 속에서 가시적 파동으로 번역되는 순간을 드러낸다.

양승원은 사진 매체의 지시성과 허구성을 비판적으로 탐구하는 초기 작업에서 출발하여, 이미지의 변형과 조각화 과정을 거쳐왔다. 최근에는 기억의 유동성을 물의 속성과 결부시켜 고정된 형태를 갖지 않으면서도 흔적을 남기는 이미지로 전환한다. 사진의 동결성을 전제로 구기거나 휘어진 입체적 조각은 과거와 현재, 실재와 허구가 중첩되는 지점을 드러낸다. 그의 작업은 고정된 상태에 머물지 않고 끊임없이 변형되며, 기억이 사회적 경험과 환경 속에서 어떻게 재구성되는지를 물질적 형태로 드러낸다.

두 작가는 전시 《Shadow Index》에서 각자의 매체를 통해 포착한 흔적의 파편을 그림자와 같은 지표로 제시한다. 김다움의 감각적 파형과 양승원의 기억의 편린은 완결된 서사를 제시하기보다, 관객을 미끄러지고 흩어지는 경험 속으로 끌어들이며 익숙한 현실의 표면 아래 잠재된 층위를 탐색하게 한다. 'Shadow Index'가 조명하는 것은 바로 이러한 층위이다. 그림자와 같은 그 영역에서 작품들은 단일한 진실을 밝히기보다 붙잡히지 않는 감각과 기억의 흔적을 지표로 펼쳐 보인다. 관객은 그 파편들을 따라가며 기억과 감각이 어떻게 흔들리고 재구성되는지를 경험하게 되며, 이는 단순한 개인적 체험을 넘어 오늘의 문화적·사회적 조건 속에서 세계를 지각하고 기억하는 방식에 대한 질문으로 확장된다.

Pipe Gallery is pleased to present Shadow Index, a two-person exhibition featuring Daum Kim (b. 1983) and Seungwon Yang (b. 1984), from September 16 to October 15. The exhibition illuminates the intersection of sensation and memory, exploring this terrain through the distinct practices of the two artists. Kim and Yang each reveal traces of emotion and memory that lie beneath the surface of reality, using their respective material vocabularies to evoke a space where the real and the unreal, the individual and the social, the experiential and the fictional converge.

Daum Kim's practice consistently engages the notion of the interface to visualize the boundaries between physical space and virtual environments, as well as between private experience and social context. Among his works, the Measure series adopts measurement as a metaphor for capturing internal sensation, translating lines, colors, and textures into painterly expressions of emotional resonance. Though rooted in painting, his surfaces unfold less as fixed images than as dynamic fields of sound, vibration, and memory. Pools of pigment that reflect light like shallow puddles are interspersed with raised, textured areas, creating a tactile topography. These subtle variations in depth reveal the moment when his visual language—refined through video, sound, public art, and installation—manifests as visible waves within the medium of painting.

Seungwon Yang's practice began with a critical inquiry into the indexicality and fictive nature of photography, gradually evolving through processes of image fragmentation and transformation. His recent works align the fluidity of memory with the properties of water, shifting photographic images into forms that resist fixity yet retain traces. Three-dimensional pieces—crumpled or bent under the premise of photography's inherent stillness—reveal points of overlap between past and present, reality and fiction. His work remains in constant flux, materially articulating the ways in which memory is reshaped through social experience and environment.

In Shadow Index, the two artists present fragments of traces—captured through their respective media—as shadow-like indices. Rather than offering a coherent narrative, Daum Kim's sensory waveforms and Seungwon Yang's shards of memory draw the viewer into an experience of slippage and dispersal, inviting an exploration of the latent strata beneath the surface of familiar reality. It is precisely these strata that Shadow Index seeks to illuminate. Within this shadowed realm, the works do not claim a singular truth; instead, they unfold as indices of elusive sensations and fleeting memories. As viewers trace these fragments, they encounter how memory and perception shift and are reconfigured—an experience that extends beyond the personal to pose broader questions about how we perceive and remember the world under contemporary cultural and social conditions.
